“Connecting and Empowering our Community Through Food”

Beacon of Hope has been serving Madison and surrounding counties, by providing food assistance and assistance with clothing and household items, since June 1997.

What began as a grassroot efforts in the kitchen of a small trailer, has grown to be the largest humanitarian relief effort in Madison County.

Our Mission

Beacon of Hope is a nonprofit, serving low-income families in Madison and surrounding counties for more than a quarter century.

Beacon strives to tailor the assistance we provide to correspond with feedback received directly from our clients. One example is in our adoption of the “Client Choice” model allowing families to choose the items they want based on their individual preferences and/or dietary restrictions, though we do still offer the option of receiving a pre-packed food package.

Beacon encourages anyone and everyone who may be struggling to make ends meet to utilize our pantry services.  Receiving food assistance will help lower a family’s weekly and/or monthly grocery bills, thereby freeing up valuable money for other essential expenses.  For many families we serve, food packages from Beacon may likely mean the difference between being able or unable to pay the electric bills, put gas in the car, and/or purchase necessary medications.

Beacon of Hope’s donation-based thrift store provides a low-cost retail alternative for Madison County residents, while creating the opportunity for Beacon to assist families in need with emergency clothing and household items.  Revenue earned in our thrift store helps to cover Beacon’s overhead operating expenses.

Beacon also offers a free book and media library, stocked with donations from our thrift store.  It is popular with clients during food distributions and thrift store shoppers.

The impact our organization has within the community goes well beyond our assistance programs.  Beacon has worked diligently to create a “safe space” for those we serve, providing moral support and developing relationships with individuals and families who have become comfortable in sharing both their daily struggles and their joys with our staff and volunteers.

“Beacon is changing the face of hunger and creating a cultural shift by removing the stigma typically associated with seeking assistance.

Every single person deserves to have their most basic needs met, which includes access to healthy, nutritious foods. Period.”
